9″  Nantucket Lightship Basket Purse by Stephen Gibbs featuring ebony plaque and carved ivory swordfish (carved by Paul Morris). Turned ivory knobs and closure peg. c. 1960. Signed on exterior base by artist.

In good condition with darker honey patina and clear signature

Stephen Gibbs (1896 – 1974) and his wife Loretta operated a basket shop on Nantucket Island for 20 years where they made and sold lightship baskets. Prior to his basket work Stephen Gibbs was an accomplished woodworker and builder on Nantucket, giving him the knowledge to make all of the components for his baskets.
